More Than a Buzzword: What Company Culture Really Means at TPF
“Great company culture” is one of the most overused phrases in business and one of the least consistently delivered.
Too often, it is reduced to surface-level perks: a pizza party after a strong quarter, casual water-cooler chat, or a line in a job description that raises more skepticism than excitement. For many, especially newer generations entering the workforce, “culture” can feel more like control dressed up as care.
At The Professional Fundraiser (TPF), we take a different approach.
For us, culture is not a slogan or a tick-box exercise. It is a deliberate, ongoing investment in how we work, how we support our people, and how we deliver impact. Our approach to fundraising is distinctive, and our culture is built with the same level of intent.
A People-First Philosophy
At the heart of TPF is a clear belief: our people drive our success.
Every result we achieve as a business is made possible by the individuals behind it. That is why we take a holistic approach to the employee experience, grounded in empathy, trust, and genuine consideration at every stage.
We are not trying to position ourselves as a “family.” Instead, we bring together diverse, high-performing individuals and create an environment where they can do their best work, in a way that works for them.
Flexibility That Actually Works
We see flexibility as a practical expression of trust.
Rather than relying on rigid hybrid models, we offer genuine flexibility through flexi-hours, remote working options, and a permanent early Friday finish. This allows our team to structure their work around their lives, not the other way around.
The outcome is measurable: stronger work-life balance, reduced burnout, and consistently high performance.
A Workplace Designed With Intention
Where and how we work matters.
Our office is based in a countryside setting on a working farm, offering access to fresh air, open space, and a natural environment that changes with the seasons. From spring daffodils to summer picnics, stepping outside is part of the working day.
Inside, the environment is designed to actively support wellbeing and productivity. Natural textures, plants, comfortable collaboration spaces, and carefully chosen colour schemes create a calm, focused atmosphere. We have also made conscious decisions around sustainability, from everyday supplies to the food and drink we provide.
This is not incidental. It is a considered approach to creating a space where people can perform at their best.
Events With Purpose and Personality
When we bring the company together, we do it with purpose.
Our biannual company update days are designed to align the business, share progress, and create space for open, collaborative discussion. They are structured, engaging, and focused on how we deliver our strategy as a team.
They are also designed to be memorable. From themed experiences such as our recent flight and destination event, to shared meals, informal conversations, and wellbeing activities like pilates, these events strengthen connection across the business.
Alongside this, our wider social calendar ensures there are regular opportunities to step away from day-to-day work and build relationships across teams.
Celebrating the Big and the Small
Recognition is embedded in how we operate.
We formally recognise performance through initiatives like Employee of the Quarter and annual awards. At the same time, we place equal value on personal milestones and everyday moments.
Birthdays, marriages, new arrivals, and long service are all acknowledged in meaningful ways. Our “small touches” initiative adds consistency to this, with seasonal moments throughout the year that bring energy and appreciation into the workplace.
We are also intentional about how we celebrate, regularly supporting small, sustainable and female-owned businesses as part of these initiatives.
Wellbeing as a Priority
Wellbeing is built into our structure, not added on.
We provide access to an Employee Assistance Programme, alongside a £200 annual wellbeing allowance, ensuring that support is available when it is needed. We also encourage habits that support long-term wellbeing, from taking breaks to spending time outdoors during the day.
This is reinforced by practical measures such as enhanced pension contributions and working patterns designed to be sustainable over time.
Purpose Beyond the Day-to-Day
Our work is rooted in purpose, and we create space for our people to act on that.
Through our Volunteer Days initiative, every team member is given two paid days each year to support causes that matter to them. This could include working with local charities, contributing to community initiatives, or supporting organisations within the third sector.
These days allow individuals to step away from their core role and make a tangible difference, while strengthening their connection to the wider impact of our work.
Listening and Evolving
We treat culture as something to measure and improve.
Each year, we run a company-wide culture survey to gather clear, actionable feedback. We review it carefully and use it to inform decisions and improvements across the business.
The result is reflected in what our team tells us, including feedback such as: “The best work-life balance I’ve had at any company, ever.”
We do not assume what works. We ask, we listen, and we act.
A Culture That Means It
Everything we do is built around a simple principle: support the person, not just the role.
From flexibility and wellbeing to recognition and development, every element of our culture is intentional and consistently delivered. It is not about one-off initiatives. It is about creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and able to succeed.
So when we talk about “excellent company culture” at TPF, it is not a claim. It is a standard we set and maintain.
